Sleep Studies
A good night’s rest affects every aspect of daily life. Nothing is worse than going without sleep, waking up grumpy and exhausted each day. Even if you do fall asleep easily, but wake up un-rested, you likely have a sleep disorder. Many sufferers of sleep apnea are unaware they have a problem, often going years or even decades without recognizing their day-time sleepiness and fatigue as symptoms of an underlying sleep disorder.
Chronic fatigue, insomnia, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy can all often be corrected by a sleep physician. In many cases, sleep physicians will need to determine the quality and characteristics of your sleep using a sleep study. Sleep studies, or polysomnograms, are investigations that provide information for the sleep physician to diagnose and treat sleep disorders. This technical investigation of the sleep state captures important information about the characteristics of sleep, including some or all of the following:
- Brain waves
- Eye movements
- Muscle tension
- Heart beat
- Breathing patterns and effort
- Leg movements
- Blood oxygen level
The sleep study is conducted in a very comfortable room and bed in the sleep laboratory, where you stay overnight. Surprisingly, most patients report that they sleep better in our Centre than they do at home.
