Restless Legs Syndrome
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a neurologic disorder that is characterized by an overwhelming urge to move the legs when they are at rest. The urge to move the legs is usually, but not always, accompanied by unpleasant sensations. Symptoms of RLS are most severe in the evening and night-time hours. The symptoms can disrupt a patient's sleep, quality of life and ability to function during the day.
RLS is commonly unrecognized or misdiagnosed as insomnia, neurological conditions, muscular or orthopedic disorders and psychiatric illness. RLS is often made much worse by underlying primary sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea.
A clinical evaluation by a sleep physician will provide an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. A sleep study is used to explore your sleep and determine whether there are other factors causing your restless legs.
